On June 16th, 4 – 8 PM, The Bronx Native will be partnering up with The Bronx Box to bring you #TheBronxisHealthy, a day filled with informative healthy habits: physically, nutritiously, and environmentally. The event will take place at The Bronx Box, a CrossFit gym in The Bronx. So let’s check out CrossFit and learn more about the event.

#NOT62

Did you know that The Bronx is the least healthiest county in New York state? In a recent County Health Ranking & Roadmaps Report, the Bronx ranked 62/62 unhealthiest counties in NY. With events like this, we aim to be #Not62.

Through this event, The Bronx will obtain the necessary tools to improve their lifestyle. There will be vendors, food/drinks, activities, informative booths, entertainment, speakers & more. The Bronx Native will be releasing some new merch and  percentage of the proceeds will be going to Green Bronx Machine.

Since the event will take place at The Bronx Box, I stopped by to get an introductory lesson and learn about CrossFit!

who is the fittest?

So what is CrossFit? CrossFit is a high-intensity fitness program incorporating elements from several sports and types of exercise. Roberto Murichi, head coach and owner of The Bronx Box, told me it seeks to answer the question, “who is the fittest?” Sure, a marathon runner or a body builder may be fit, but they are only fit in very specific areas. CrossFit is all encompassing. A combination of different workouts and styles to make you great at the hardest sport of them all, life.

brings it all together

There are things we do everyday: squats, presses and lifts. Why not be really good at those things? CrossFit brings it all together no matter what you do. Some of the members of The Box include delivery people, bus drivers, and teachers. Roberto told me that you don’t have to be fit to start CrossFit, just be willing to commit to the plan.

Roberto ran me through an intro session. The main focus are group classes, but personal trainers are available. My workout included doing squats, sit-ups, running in place, push-ups, and ball slams. I did each as many as I could in 45 seconds intervals. After every set there was 1 minute break. I did three sets.

It was intense but it was manageable. The Bronx Box also as an app to keep track of exercises. This is a great way to keep track of how you are doing and compare yourself to how others are doing.

However, you can’t just do it once and see results. It takes time and dedication. Classes are three times a week or on weekends. The team is there help you out to figure out what works for you.

The Bronx is Healthy will be on June 16th from 4 – 8 pm at The Bronx Box, located at 229 Bruckner Blvd, Bronx, NY 10454.

Vendors to make an appearance:

We won’t be New York’s unhealthiest county anymore because The Bronx is Healthy! See you there!
