A NEW SPORT TO TRY?

How to play rugby - equipment for rugby

Rugby as a sport does not require so much equipment to play.

This sport is a tough sport, which requires that the payer be adorned in protective equipment before attempting to play this high contact sport. The equipment needed to play the game are readily available in rugby stores. Before attempting to play this sport, the players must ensure that they have proper clothing, boots, protective gear, and the rugby ball.

The following is a listing of equipment a player must have before attempting to play the game of rugby. Many different rugby stores stock these items.

1. Rugby Cloths

The jerseys worn by rugby players are made from a special fabric that allows them to withstand rough play and tugging. The clothes are snug to prevent the opponents from gripping the player. The shorts worn by players are designed in such a way that they are not too loose. The shorts must be comfortable enough to allow the players to manoeuvre their way during the game.

2. Boots

The boots are designed with a higher cut to afford some extra protection to the ankle. The ankle protection also comes in handy when the players are engaged in a scrum. Backfield players who habitually run more than the other players do prefer lower cut boots. These boots afford agility to the backfield players allowing them to run and score touchdowns. The metal studs found on the lower side of the boots afford the players traction while on the field and at the same time preventing them from slipping or tumbling down during a tackle.

3. Protective equipment

The rugby players can wear upper-body pads to protect their chest and shoulders. These pads are lightweight and thin and offer protection from the force associated with tackles. Most players also prefer wearing lightweight head protection. This protects the players from scrapes and blows to the head during the tackles and scrums. The headgear offers protection from impact injuries that might turn fatal. Players are also advised to consider wearing a gum shield to protect the teeth and the gums during the game. If you join a club and the correct protective equipment is not used, contact a personal injury attorney to help you determine if you have the basis for a claim.

4. Limbs support

The game places a lot of strain on the limbs of the body. There is, therefore, need to protect the limbs from the pressures of the game. There are varieties of supports that can be used to support the body. These include thigh supports, knee supports, back supports and shoulder supports. These supports afford the players preventive protection.

5. The Ball

The rugby ball is designed to certain specifications. The ball is oval and has four panels that are jointly stitched. The length of the rugby ball is roughly 300 millimetres with a circumference of about 610 millimetres. The weight of the ball should not exceed 460 grams and must have an air pressure of about 0.70 kg/cm2 at the start of a rugby game. The players should buy an extra ball or balls to substitute or exchange with the ball on play when needed.

Try Something Unexpected

If rugby is not really for you, why not try a sport that you would never have considered before now? Something like archery offers an experience that’s very different. There’s a lot more to it than you might expect, you need to calculate draw length, get your form right and develop a steady hand. Or if you’re looking for something a little more physical and intense, give squash a try. It offers more of a workout than you might expect.
