A change in season means a change to our lives and routines; no longer are we spending all of our free time outdoors.

Instead, it’s natural to want to head inside and enjoy more warm and cozy activities- time spent with family, movie days with a lit fire and generally keeping out of the elements. Here are some of the ways you can get prepared for the seasons ahead.

UPDATE YOUR WARDROBE

The cold weather has really set in now, so it’s the perfect time to sort out your wardrobe. Box up summer t-shirts, shorts and summer shoes that you won’t wear again until next year, either moving them to the back of the wardrobe or into a cupboard or attic to save space. Go through all of your autumn/ winter items and check that everything still fits and is in good condition. If you’re missing some key items, write a list so that you can shop for everything you need. A few different jumpers, some long sleeve tops, jackets and jeans will get most people through the upcoming seasons. If you work outside or in a cold environment like a factory or warehouse then you might want to invest in some thermals. And don’t forget a hat, scarf, gloves and a warm winter coat.

CHECK YOUR CAR

Driving in winter definitely carries more dangers. Poor road conditions, snow, ice and rain and the risk of drink drivers around the festive season can all be an issue. Make sure you’re keeping your wits about you, and that your car is in good working order. Check your tire treads and tire pressure, make sure all the fluids are topped up. Have it serviced regularly or checked over by an auto repair shop if you notice any issues. If you’re going on longer journeys, it’s worth packing an emergency kit and keeping it in the back- a torch, waterproof boots, blankets and some food/ water can all come in useful if you get stranded. Make sure your breakdown recovery is up to date and running too.

GET YOUR HOME READY

There are a few jobs that are worth doing around the home to prepare for the months ahead. First, a good clean and declutter before the festivities roll around will make space for new items coming into the home- you could sell what you don’t need to raise some extra cash. Swap out thin duvets for thicker winter varieties, and purchase some cozy throws and other comforts for beds and sofas. Since you’re going to be spending more time indoors now the weather has taken a turn, it’s worth making your home a pleasant place to be. If it needs updating or decorating then a simple coat of paint and some new home accessories can make all the difference.
