Many people are still required to go into work in person. Whether you’re starting a brand new job, you’ve been promoted to a new office, or this is your very first day of work ever, online or off, the question of what you should wear is an important one to answer.
It would be a colossal error to arrive at work to find you’ve dressed formally and everyone else is in jeans and tennis shoes. Equally, if you’re wearing a t-shirt and sweatpants and your colleagues have on suits and ties, you’re going to feel embarrassed, and you might even find yourself on the receiving end of a disciplinary meeting.
So just what should you wear on your first day at work? Here are some ideas.
The Same As The Rest
When we suggest you wear the same as everyone else on your first day at work, we don’t mean exactly the same (unless your job involves wearing a uniform, in which case you don’t have to worry about what to wear anyway). What we mean is that you should do your research and find out the kind of clothing that will be expected in your new place of work. There are several different choices, including:
- Formal business attire
- Casual business attire
- Informal dress code
Making sure you know which of these is going to match up with everyone else is going to make your first day – and every other day – much more comfortable. It’s best to find this information out in advance so you can prepare by buying new clothing if you need to.
A Good Bag
It’s unlikely you’re not going to have to bring at least some small items to and from the office when you’re at work. Even if it’s your lunch or wallet, you’ll still need somewhere to put it, and if you have to bring a laptop or tablet to and from work each day, you’ll definitely want something safe to carry it in.
The best option is a minimalist backpack. These bags are ideal because they aren’t too big and cumbersome so they won’t be a problem even on public transport, yet because of their design they are large enough to fit in everything you might need, including a laptop and charger.
Make sure you buy a good quality bag that will last. Not only will this save you money in the long term, but you will be at much less risk of the bag breaking unexpectedly and all your precious – and expensive – items falling into the road.
Spare Shoes
Male or female, shoes for work are not always going to be the most comfortable, especially if the dress code is formal or even smart casual. High heels, strappy sandals, or tight patent leather shoes can all rub and cause pain after a time, making your job much more unpleasant than it needs to be.
When you’re packing your things to take to work on your first day, don’t forget to bring spare shoes. You can wear your comfortable old sneakers for your commute, and then switch them over to something more in keeping with the rest of your look once you get to the office, and vice versa. Your feet will feel much better, and you’ll enjoy the day much more.
Thanks for reading and y’all stay dandy.
