What to do After a Car Accident

Being involved in a car accident can turn what should have been a regular old road trip into a nightmare. It’s not just the accident itself, but the after effects of the accident on you and anybody else who’s in the car or in the opposite car with you. Accidents can happen, and they do happen far too regularly.

Did you know that there have been hundreds of thousands of car accidents happening every single year? Knowing this, can easily frighten somebody away from using a car, but if everybody on the road is driving safely, accidents can be avoided. Car accident lawyers are some of your best support if you are ever in an accident, so it could help to have one on your side should one occur. Prevention is always better than cure though, so it can help to learn what to do in the event an accident happens to you. Let’s take a look at some tips to help.

  • Stop the car. If you are still in control of your vehicle when an accident happens, the first thing that you should always do is stop the car. As much as possible, move the car to the side of the road or at least put on the hazard lights so that everybody behind you knows there has been an accident. When you do this, you are more likely to be in a good position to be able to exit your car safely and get away from the scene so that you can assess your injuries if there are any. If you are in an accident that is bad enough not to be able to leave your vehicle, do what you can to turn on your hazard lights so that people know that you were there.
  • Take down some details. If you are capable enough to do it, take down some details of the other driver involved in the crash. It’s important to do this as quickly as you can after an accident, because you don’t want to run the risk of the other person driving away. You need to get their name and address, driving license information, insurance information, and you need to ensure that you both call the police. This way, you both get a copy of the report and whoever is at fault can contact their insurance company as can you. The police report will really help after an accident because then you both know that you are covered.
  • Take some pictures. If you have access to your phone or to a camera, take some pictures of the site so that you have evidence of the accident and all of the surroundings nearby. This will ensure that when you make a claim on your insurance you have something to back you up. Recording the time, date and the precise location of the accident is also vital, so make sure that this is captured in photo form if you can.
  • Go to the hospital. Whether the accident is your fault or not, and whether or not you can feel any injuries on your body, you need to go to the hospital so that you can get a medical report for your insurance company. Don’t skip this step so that you don’t lose out on an insurance payout.
