There’s nothing like holding a brand new comic book in your hands.
Nothing like the crisp edges flipping over to yield incredible art, vibrant colors, and powerful storytelling all in the palm of your hand.
A real comic book is an amazing thing. We won’t try to dispute that. But for as awesome as the real thing is, sometimes it’s just more convenient to have a million comic books in the palm of your hand instead.
When you don’t have room for another box of comics in your house, or when you want to read on the go, an app on your phone or your tablet is often the better option.
Here are our picks for the best comic book reader apps available today. We consider price, availability, and performance in our recommendations so you can find the one that’s best for you.
Best Comic Book Reader Apps for Multiple Platforms
When you want to balance your real-life reading and news coverage from your Apple News+ guide with a healthy dose of action and suspense across any of your devices, these are going to be the comic book apps for you.
1. Comixology
There’s a good chance Digital Comics by Comixology will be the first comic book reading app most die-hards will think of. It offers an all-you-can-read monthly subscription service with a huge stable of comics to choose from that they update regularly. (Though, admittedly, it’s not as huge a selection as what you can outright buy from them.)
This app also allows for sleek offline reading and syncing your collection and reading progress across multiple devices.
2. Marvel Unlimited
You know Marvel’s own comic reader is going to be good, and Unlimited doesn’t disappoint. It does require a subscription, but in return for your $9.99 a month (less on a yearly billing cycle), you do get a truly unlimited experience.
With a 7-day free trial to get you started, you might just be able to put a dent in their 27,000+ comics, which even boasts some of the old classics you still know and love.
3. DC Universe
DC’s version has over 22,000 comics available (as well as the ability to play TV series and movies from the franchise). And like the Marvel version, you can test it out with a free trial ($7.99 per month).
Batman has never looked so good, and with DC Universe’s all-you-can-read format, he’s never been more accessible either.
4. Amazon Kindle
While this is a general book-reading app, it does work for reading comic books too. With its huge selection of content, you’ll be sure to find plenty of comics from a wide variety of sources there as well.
Kindle allows you to sync your reading and collection across any device you own—your train commute to work can be just as action-packed as your evening reading at home.
5. Libby/Hoopla
Libby by Overdrive and Hoopla Digital, both of these apps work similarly, so we’ve lumped them together. We’ve used Libby, but word is Hoopla’s comic viewer is particularly nice.
Both apps are free and work by linking to your library card to give you access to your public library network’s collection of digital content. Lucky for you, that often includes a hearty helping of comic books.
Though you need to place holds on books and get and wait for them sometimes—just like a physical library, they can only lend out as many copies as they own/have licenses for—you can’t beat the price.
IOS Comic Book Apps
These two readers will make consuming comic books even more enjoyable with your Apple devices.
6. YACReader
Exclusive to IOS among mobile devices (you can also download it onto your computer), YACReader is capable of reading just about any file you can imagine a comic book could come in.
Great at keeping your collection organized and boasting a versatile reader mode, this is a comic reader app IOS users won’t want to overlook.
7. iComics
Highly customizable, iComics is one of the nicer readers available. Smooth reading and moving from page to page awaits you with this app.
iComics does cost $1.99 in the App Store, but this functional reader is well worth the price and can handle comics in any format you can throw at it.
Android Readers
Here are two of the best apps for reading comic books money can buy, and they’re available solely to Android users.
8. Astonishing Comic
Astonishing Comic might just be the best comic reader android has to offer exclusively. Keep in mind that it is strictly a reader and organizer–you can’t buy your comics here.
This app allows for syncing between devices and intuitive automatic collection organization. It also has the option to cast it to your Google Chromecast for the relaxing home theater comic book reading experience.
9. Perfect Viewer
The app of choice for many android users, Perfect Viewer is another smooth, seamless option for reading your comic collection (but not buying for it).
A serviceable app with very few flaws, the one complaint some users had was the inability to zoom in on single panels. If you can live without that, this simple, unobtrusive reader might be the best option for android users.
Pow!
This is just a taste of the many, many comic book readers out there. There are others—many of them even free—that you can add to your arsenal to make sure you’ve got all the comics you could ever want, all at the tip of your finger.
