When planning a closet for a vacation, you usually plan for the weather you’re expecting as well as the types of events and social occasions you’ll be attending, but sometimes there’s another element to consider.
Active vacations can be more complex as you want to dress for style and comfort as well as function, and the two looks are not often compatible. However, there are ways to create a vacation wardrobe which will satisfy both needs, so that you can feel as good as you look.
This guide features some tips and advice to help you dress for an active vacation while maintaining your look.
PRIORITIZE EASY MOVEMENT
It’s an obvious point, but the clothes you take with you on your active vacation should be easy to move in. This means choosing pants and shirts which have some stretch to them but are also cut to flatter your shape and which will retain crisp lines. Your shoes should be as comfortable and supportive as possible, but simple designs are best to give you more versatility in your outfit choices.
CHOOSE SWEAT WICKING FABRICS
If you are planning on pushing yourself and working up a sweat, you want to avoid needing to change clothes afterwards or you’ll be taking twice as many outfits as there are days of your vacation. To avoid having to walk around in wet and potentially smelly clothes, opt for sweat wicking fabrics which will wick moisture away from your body. This will not only keep you feeling and looking dry and smelling more fragrant, but should also minimize the risk of sweat rash.
EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
One of the greatest joys of travel is that you never know what you will see or experience today or who you will meet. You could leave the hotel in the morning and not return again until the early hours of the next day, so you should try to pack clothes which will stand plenty of wear without looking crumpled. Wrinkle-resistant fabrics are best for travel, especially in terms of minimizing ironing when you’re on the road.
THINK VERSATILITY
Even the most active of vacations are bound to include some evening plans, whether it’s drinks in the bar or a meal in a restaurant. The clothes you take with you should, ideally, be able to take you from day to night with very few adjustments. Whether you’re on a Snowboard instructor course or hiking, your wardrobe should be versatile enough to dress up or down as needed.
IF YOU WOULDN’T WEAR IT AT HOME, DON’T PACK IT
When you vacation in a warmer climate, you probably often opt for shorts. They are definitely a good choice in terms of staying cool, but they can be a fashion misstep if you’re not careful. The key is to make sure they are something you would wear when at home. That means so baggy skater shorts or the old Bermuda shorts. Choose tailored shorts in a flexible fabric which gives you the comfort and movement without losing shape and style.
