Today I’m checking out Gepetto USA, a wooden accessories brand based out of California with roots in Europe. What immediately caught my attention was their braided leather belt in the place of straps for their watches. The fact that they have sunglasses as well is icing on the cake. Gepetto is a contemporary brand specializing in handcrafted accessories. Like the creator of Pinocchio, Gepetto brings life to original design in wood.
What sets wooden watches apart from other watches, are the fact that they are made with wood. While the insides are still metal (Swiss movement in this case), the outsides or even the strap itself may be made out of wood. For example, this watch is made with a walnut wood case but the dial is white with mineral glass crystal. Also unlike metal watches, the wood is constantly absorbing your natural oils. This helps keep its sheen.
How do you wear a wooden watch? Just like any other watch, it depends on your style and your choice of grain of wooden watch. It can work with a suit or weekend wear. Take it to your next board meeting or a night out. Here I am wearing Gepetto’s Morning in London with a double breasted suit and tie. As a dapper and dandy guy, I’m able to mix this watch with my suit and make it my statement piece. Talk to me about wooden watches! I could also easily wear this with a white t-shirt and jeans. Since I’m Dandy In The Bronx, I’d wear a jacket with this as well and roll up the sleeves.
Wooden watches are eco-friendly as they use walnut from Central Europe and are still water resistant. I wouldn’t recommend diving with them but rain won’t ruin the watch.
