FINDING A HAIRSTYLE TO SUIT YOUR FACE FOR MEN

Any man will have one of five face shapes. These are round, oval, square, heart, or diamond. We look at each of these in turn and recommend what you should look for in a style.

Round

What a round face lacks is definition. However, these tips can also help if you have chubby cheeks. What you are aiming for is to add some angles or planes to your look that cancel out the roundness, which can make you seem immature.

You want to harden the roundness with a square cut, starting with the fringe sides with high recession.  Add height to the top of the head and thin down the sides to a number three or two with a hair clipper. A square beard will do away with the roundness of your chin.

Oval

Oval faces are prized in women, but as a man, you want to bring out a more alpha appearance. The best haircut for an oval face is the traditional short back and sides. There should be more length on top than on the sides. Avoid a fringe and sweep your hair up off your forehead for a tougher look. Combine this with a side-swept parting. A goatee and sideburns complete the look. While this is the perfect look for an oval face, you are one of two groups that can wear many other styles too, so you may want to experiment.

Square

A square face screams (or perhaps growls) alpha male. This is the classic chiselled visage with a strong jawline described in female romantic fiction. So, it is hardly surprising that there are relatively few hairstyles you cannot get away with.

Still, nothing beats an undercut with shorter sides and the length on top. It is designed to show off your face. There are almost as many variations to an undercut as there are other hairstyles. You will keep your stylist busy if you stick to an undercut and keep altering it slightly.

Your jaw is perfect as it is. Don’t hide it under a bush of facial hair. However, you can grow some light stubble for a devil-may-care appeal.

Heart

Think Leonardo DiCaprio. The top and sides of the face are a bit too wide for the shorter, pointier bottom section. You want to draw attention away from these extremes. A long fringe can make the top appear narrower and less pronounced. A beard is a must and here you would do well to try out some of DiCaprio’s beard styles.

Diamond

All the width is in the cheeks while the forehead and chin are tapered. A longish fringe with soft, mussed-up curls will add to the brow and give a more rounded look. A more rigid fringe will widen the brow to an almost square shape and should be teamed with medium-length or fringe-length sides.
