With October coming up, you may be thinking, “What am I going to wear for Halloween?.” Well it’s time to take the clothes you already have and make it work! Here are some costume ideas that are DIY, or easily obtainable! Today we are tackling a classic: I Love Lucy.
If you aren’t familiar, I Love Lucy was an American television sitcom that originally ran on CBS from 1951 to 1957. The show starred the red headed Lucille Ball (Lucy Ricardo) and her real-life husband Desi Arnaz (Ricky Ricardo), a Cuban-born American. It followed the life of Lucy, a middle class housewife in New York City, who concocted plans with her best friends to appear alongside her bandleader husband Ricky Ricardo in his nightclub.
Latinos in the 1950s! Wild right? A real one at that! In 1950, CBS asked Ball to create a show and saw this as a great opportunity to work with her husband, so Lucy insisted that Desi play her husband. CBS were reluctant because he was Cuban. CBS executives believed that audiences would not believe the marriage between an all-American girl and a Latin man. Jfc. To prove CBS wrong, the couple developed a vaudeville act that they performed at Newburgh NY’s historic Ritz Theater with Arnaz’s orchestra. The act was a hit and convinced CBS executive Harry Ackerman that a Ball-Arnaz pairing would be a worthwhile venture.
I remember the reruns so much when I was younger and really appreciate the comedy now as an adult. So here’s how to dress up as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo from I Love Lucy. I teamed up with Megan here to do our couples costume. Watch a few episodes to get into character, remember they a comedy duo! Half the costume is staying in character.
