People can become addicted to substances for a range of different reasons. Often, there is an underlying mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety, which causes the person to self-medicate using drugs or alcohol, leading to an addiction developing.
Treatment for a substance abuse problem is not always easy, but with the help of a supportive family and a desire to get better, it is certainly possible. If you have a relative who wants to get clean from substances, then it’s not uncommon for families to feel helpless and scared in this situation. However, with the right support, your family can be more influential than you might realize.
Family Therapy
Family Therapy During Drug Rehab can be an ideal place to start. If your relative is currently getting professional treatment for their substance abuse, it’s important that you are able to talk to them in this kind of safe environment. With a trained family therapist, you can talk about your worries and concerns, the impact that their addiction has had on your family, and how it has made you feel. It’s also a chance for you to listen to them, as they tell you about how the addiction has impacted them. It’s a chance to get everything out in the open, let go of blame, and figure out how you will all work together to overcome this.
Forgiveness
While it’s not always healthy to forgive somebody if they have truly wronged you, forgiveness is sometimes necessary for yourself. Or, if you love your relative and truly want to be able to help them through this, then it might be necessary to let go of any blame, anger and resentment you are holding against them and find it in your heart to forgive them for their choices. View them with empathy and try to see their point of view. While none of this might justify the impact that their addiction has had on your family, it can help you start with finding more peace.
Healthy Support
Providing healthy support as a family is key to promoting the best environment for recovery. After somebody with a substance abuse problem comes out of a rehab or detox center and returns home, this is where it can start to get risky. Now, they are surrounded by temptation and must stay strong. Providing healthy support could mean never bringing alcohol into the house, for example, or setting up a regular family meeting to talk things over. Try to fill your time with healthy things that you can do together, like exercising or traveling to new places.
Trust
Trusting your relative to do the right thing is key to encouraging them to stay on the right path. Somebody who feels that they are constantly scrutinized may become anxious and this can lead to rifts and other problems within the family. To create a healthy environment, everybody needs to trust each other, so make this a priority in your household.
Helping a family member through an addiction problem is never an easy process. It can be stressful for relatives, so please make sure that you have support for yourself in place too.
