When you think about car mods, you imagine having to go to a specialist mechanic to fit them. But that’s not always necessary. In fact, there are a bunch of popular upgrades out there that you can do in your own garage or shed.
The DIY approach to car upgrades sounds like something out of The Fast and the Furious. But it’s a legitimate reality.
New Spark Plugs
Imagine being about to increase your engine performance by up to 10 percent by replacing a cheap part. Well, if you swap out of your old spark plugs for new ones yourself, you can.
Top spark plugs use rare Earth metals, like iridium, that improve combustion efficiency and provide heightened economy. Some upgrades can even pay for themselves over the long-term in reduced fuel costs.
Upgraded Engine Control Unit
The engine control unit is essentially a small computer that optimizes engine function. Sensors in different components continually feed it information, allowing it to make better decisions about what the car does next.
Upgrading the unit isn’t cheap, but it’s not too expensive either. Plus, it is something you can usually do yourself because of standard fittings. You just whip out the old unit and replace it with the new one. Often you can improve gas mileage and performance at the same time.
Data Monitoring
Data monitoring is becoming increasingly important for drivers, especially in urban areas. Keeping track of how you drive the car helps you prove your case to insurers and gives your car accident lawyer more information they can use to get compensation.
The way these devices work is quite simple. They are either a black box that the insurance company fits or a small unit you put under the hood of the car. These systems track engine usage and can also diagnose problems with your vehicle.

Swapping out your old cold air intake for a new one can enhance the performance of your vehicle. It’s also easy to do and doesn’t usually require any specialist equipment.
You’ll find that most cold air intakes become bunged up after a while with debris. Usually, you’d just replace the filter. But that’s not always possible. Furthermore, manufacturers tend to cut costs on air intakes, providing the engine with less-than-optimal air intake.
Backup Camera
Lastly, you can now add a backup camera to your vehicle, without having to get the manufacturer to retrofit one for you at a high cost.
The way it works is simple. You place a camera behind a small hole in your rear bumper and connect it via Bluetooth to a display on your dashboard.
