Cuban collar shirts found their way to the US in the 1900s. This particular shirt style dates as far back as the 18th century in South America. Originally this shirt served as a kind of uniform for working-class men. It is unknown how this shirt made its way to the US, but Cuban collars became popular in the 50s — quickly becoming one of the wardrobe staples of the decade.

What is a Cuban Collar Shirt?

The classic Cuban collar shirt features an open, notch lapel-like collar, short sleeves, and a straight, boxy hem. I paired it with a linen suit and I’m ready for my next event. Ferry life for the views on NYC Ferry‘s new Soundview route in The Bronx. It has a similar shape to retro bowling shirts and Hawaiian shirts but with a bit more style. The modern look features a more fitted cut in the body and tapered sleeves.

HOW TO WEAR A CUBAN COLLAR SHIRT

Play around with both traditional and modern, slim-fitting variations to see which one works for you. Maybe you like a more looser fit, maybe you like it to be closer to the skin. If you do go for the traditional boxier shape, go for a tapered pair of pants to balance everything out.

Wear your Cuban collar shirts both with and without a blazer of course, like a dandy would. The shirt is a great standalone piece but looks very cool and very Mad Men when paired with a blazer. The key is to wear the shirt collar over your blazer lapels.
