Top 90s Looks That Are Finally Back In Style

The 90s have been mercilessly mocked over the years for the crazy styles it introduced to the world. However, this mockery is somewhat unfair since the generation who grew up in that time period had to contend with the wacky fashions of the 80s while navigating the brave new world of rolling news coverage and the instruction of the digital age.

Moreover, in hindsight, many of the more questionable fashion decisions have had an outsized influence on the world today. Fortunately, the time has come when the fashion cycles have realigned and are bringing back the best styles that the era created. So hold on to your baggy jeans, and let’s take a look at some things from the past that have become hot once more!

Distressed Jeans

Distressed jeans dominated 90s fashion, and they’re finally back in style! You’ve probably seen them everywhere, from ripped denim shorts to distressed skinny jeans with fraying edges often found near the knee. The key to wearing this look is keeping it casual and effortless. It looks great when worn with a basic white t-shirt or tank top, and don’t forget to add a pair of Converse sneakers for extra 90s vibes! In many ways, they illustrate grunge outfits making a comeback, with kids today using the grunge style to showcase their individuality much in the same way as those who developed grunge did before. You can usually find distressed jeans at most stores if you think you can pull off this look. However, if you want to create your own one-of-a-kind pair, visit your local thrift store for some vintage denim. Follow the trend by adding rips and tears that are strategically placed around the knees, seat, or thighs. Finish off the look by rolling up the hems. If you really want that whole 90s appearance, opt for a baggy pair, and the baggier, the better!

Overalls

Overalls are making a big comeback in almost all genres, but were made famous by the trend-setting pioneers of the 90s! Ok, so it was probably more like the 80s when they became in vogue, but the fact reams that there were so many people walking around wearing them that they are more associated with e 90s than any other time. One of the most famous individuals to don a set of overalls back in the day was none other than Eminem, which he wore doing most of his live appearances. Whether they are made from denim or corduroy, overalls offer a laid-back and car-free look while being ultra-comfortable. You can dress them up with layers underneath and tailor jackets on top, or keep it casual, pairing the overalls with a basic tee, sneakers, and a baseball cap. Some modern celebs making waves by rocking the overalls look include:

  • Tyler, The Creator
  • Andre 3000
  • Jared Leto
  • DMX

Windbreakers

Windbreakers are one of the quintessential looks from the late 90s and early 2000s. Often seen in bright colors or wild prints, they’re suddenly making a big comeback (although this time with slightly more muted designs). Whether you want something super casual to layer over a simple t-shirt or something more stylish that you can use as a statement piece by itself, there’s sure to be a windbreaker out there for you. Windbreakers were initially designed as lightweight jackets that protected against light rain and wind. Today’s versions usually consist of a packable nylon fabric with contrast zips, drawstrings, and hoods for extra warmth. They should fit closely without being too tight or restrictive. You can find them in all sorts of colors and patterns – from sports team logos to colorful animal prints. For an unmistakable 90s look, pair your windbreaker with a pair of baggy jeans, as mentioned earlier, to become the epitome of the decade’s fashion.

Baggy Jeans

If there is one item of clothing that epitomizes the 1990s like no other, it is undoubtedly the baggy jean! When you look back at photos and videos of the cool kids, they would all don a pair of incredibly baggy jeans, sometimes paired with a chain that was connected to their wallet in one of the oversized pockets. However, these days you want to make sure to get the right fit. This can mean anything from skinny boy jeans with a slimmer leg opening to more relaxed fits with more room throughout the hip and thigh area. The key is to find something that fits you well but retains its voluminous appearance. Furthermore, these are firmly planted in the “casual” category, and you likely won’t find them making an appearance anywhere that requires some semblance of formality.

Turtlenecks

A turtleneck is a timeless look for men that can easily be dressed up or down, depending on our preference. Throw one on over jeans to give an effortlessly cool vibe, or add it to a suit jacket for a more formal ensemble. No matter how you rock it, turtlenecks flatter every body type and instantly make any man look like a modern-day style icon. Going all the way up to the neck, they sit close to the body while having enough room under the arms to keep you comfortable. You should invest in one with an oversized cut and opt for thicker materials when shopping in colder climates. Moreover, you can channel your inner Steve Jobs and make everyone know you mean businesses!

Flannel Shirts

On many levels, the humble flannel shirt has never gone out of fashion since it traverses almost all cultures and people. Nonetheless, these were immensely popular back in the day, and you could see nearly everyone from covenantal rock stars to gangsta and Hispanic rappers sprint the flannel. Nowadays, they are more often associated with what you could describe as those with hipster tendencies. But don’t let that scare you away from giving them a go because they’re stylish, incredibly comfortable, and ideal for most casual situations.

Combat Boots

While Doc Martins were the boots of the 90s, the fact remains that it was the combat style that was so prevalent. They have kind of made a comeback, albeit in a slicker design than the clumpy boots of yesteryear.

As you can see, numerous styles from the 90s have made their way back to the forefront of societal norms. From the grunge-inspired distressed jeans to the subdued yet classy turtleneck look, you have many choices to recreate the 90s today.
