Off to sea. Today’s post is inspired by nautical prep style. Off to New England or got a boat? I got you covered.

A warm weather style, the nautical aesthetic works because it is simple. But because it is simple, it can be easy to mess up!

Whether it’s chunky, cable-knit sweaters, Navy pea coats, chambray shirts or boat shoes, the nautical style has been consistently revisited and re-imagined throughout time.

Movies contain tons of classic nautical moments. Need some inspiration? Check out Steve McQueen’s thick Aran sweater in The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Michael Caine’s double-breasted, beige, suede reefer jacket in The Italian Job (1969) or Daniel Craig’s dark navy Billy Reid pea coat in Skyfall (2012).

What makes this a timeless style? Traditional maritime style is all about versatility and practicality. The modern version is close fit and features slightly heavier textures that makes it really stand out.

To truly understand its enduring appeal we need only look at some key pieces, the sweater and boat shoes.

I’m wearing a Nautica long sleeve cable tipped v-neck sweater, layered with a blue shirt. You can wear chinos or shorts with this look, but I opted for shorts. Complete the look with boat shoes and a casual belt.
