This feature highlights my night inside LUMINISCENCE at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a 360-degree immersive light show in Midtown Manhattan.
Disclosure: #ad I attended the LUMINISCENCE VIP preview at St. Patrick’s Cathedral as a paid partner with LUMINISCENCE. Everything below is my honest experience.
“I‘m a Bronx guy. I don’t go to Midtown for no reason.”
This was the reason.
Real talk, the last time I stepped inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral was for my high school graduation. Up Hayes! I went to Cardinal Hayes High School right here in the Bronx, so walking back in all these years later for a 360-degree light show felt like a full-circle moment.
I walked into St. Patrick’s Cathedral on a Wednesday night expecting a church, and I walked out calling it the most epic 60 minutes in Midtown. LUMINISCENCE turns the entire cathedral into a 360-degree canvas of light, music, and story. Video mapping washes across the arches, columns, and stone walls while a live choir and the LUMINISCENCE Orchestra carry the score. The story is narrated by Jonathan Roumie, who you probably know as Jesus from The Chosen.
More than two million people have seen LUMINISCENCE across eight countries since 2023. Now it is in New York City, inside one of the most iconic buildings in the city. Here is my full breakdown: what the show actually feels like, what to expect when you go, and how to get 10% off your tickets.
What Is LUMINISCENCE, Exactly?
LUMINISCENCE is an immersive show built for historic cathedrals. Instead of a stage, the building itself is the show. Projection mapping covers the Gothic arches, the columns, and the stone walls, so the entire space moves around you while the live choir and orchestra perform the score.
The New York edition plays inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets. The story unfolds in three acts: Gathering, Community, and Nation. Between the narration, the music, and the scale of the room, the whole thing feels less like watching a show and more like standing inside one.
The main show runs about 60 minutes. There is also a live music pre-show before it starts, so plan to arrive when doors open and settle in.
What to Expect When You Go
- Arriving: Use the VIP/Media entrance on 5th Avenue at the corner of 50th and 5th if that applies to your ticket type. Security lines close right at showtime, and there is no late seating once the show starts, so give yourself a real cushion coming in. No dedicated parking, so plan on transit or reserve a garage spot ahead of time.
- The pre-show: Doors open before showtime with live music in the space. This is your window to take it all in: the architecture, the scale of the nave, the choir warming up. Take your photos and video here, because once the show starts you will want to put the phone down and watch.
- The moment the lights drop: This is the part my reel is built around. The cathedral goes dark, the projections take over the walls, and for the next hour you are inside the story. Wide shots of the lit arches and columns are the money visuals, and the choir and orchestra are part of the experience, not background.
- The house rules: A few things worth knowing before you go: hats come off before entering the nave, there is no food or drinks inside, and there are no restrooms in the cathedral, so plan ahead. Phone photos and video are welcome, but no livestreaming during the show.

I filmed the whole night and cut it into a Reel. This is the exact clip, shot inside St. Patrick’s during the show:
