British vs. Italian Style: My Custom Suit Experience at Enzo Custom NYC

Cleaning out my closet is never just about tidying up—it’s about making strategic room for growth. Specifically, making room for two new additions from Enzo Custom.

If you’ve followed my style journey for a while, you know I’ve visited their Brooklyn location before. This time, I headed to their Soho showroom at 599 Broadway to explore a side-by-side comparison that every man should understand: the difference between British and Italian tailoring.

The Custom Process in Soho

Working with Arthur at the Soho location reminded me why custom is king. Arthur is a true dandy who understands that fit isn’t just about measurements—it’s about how the fabric moves with you.

During our fitting, we noticed the jacket felt a bit tight in the chest. In the world of off-the-rack, that’s a dealbreaker. At Enzo Custom, Arthur clocked it instantly and had it adjusted within days. That flexibility is the hallmark of a premium NYC tailoring experience.

British Style vs. Italian Style: The Breakdown

We decided to craft two suits with identical processes but completely different DNA. Here is how they stack up:

1. The British Style (The Power Suit)

The British silhouette is all about structure and formality. If you want to command a room, this is the architecture you need.

  • Structure: Heavily padded shoulders for a broader look.
  • The Front: A “closed” front with straighter, more traditional lines.
  • Vents: Traditionally single or double-vented.
  • Vibe: Professional, authoritative, and timeless.

2. The Italian Style (The Neapolitan Flair)

When tailors talk about “Italian style,” they are usually referring to the Neapolitan tradition. This is the suit I’ve been wearing most lately (you’ve probably seen the green one on my feed!).

  • Structure: Very lightly padded shoulders and lighter chest canvassing.
  • Feel: A much softer, “unstructured” feel that moves naturally.
  • Vents: Almost always double-vented in the back.
  • Vibe: Relaxed elegance, perfect for NYC summers or creative events.

Same Tailor, Two Different Expressions

It is incredible how the same process and the same tailor can yield two completely different moods. I’ve already started experimenting with the navy Italian suit, and I’m even considering mixing elements from both styles for my next commission.
