Who’s writing this: I’m Diego, Dandy In The Bronx. I’ve been running for years, through every season New York throws at me. I’ve made the mistakes so you don’t have to, like the time I ran in basketball shoes and couldn’t walk right for a week. Here’s the gear that actually matters.

If you started running during the pandemic like so many people did, you already know the hardest part isn’t the running. It’s figuring out what to wear and what to bring. Too much gear and you’re overdressed and overheating. Too little and you’re miserable by mile two. After years of trial and error on Bronx streets, here are the essentials that actually make a difference.

1. Compression Gear

Compression gear isn’t just about looking like a pro, though it doesn’t hurt. Compression socks, leggings, and tops support your muscles, help with recovery, and keep you warm when the temperature drops. For socks specifically, I recommend Go2 compression socks. They’ve held up through countless runs and the fit stays consistent wash after wash. You can also browse their full lineup at shopgo2.com.

2. High-Quality Running Shoes

This is the one place you should not cut corners. Good running shoes prevent injury, period. I see people out running in basketball shoes or fashion sneakers and I cringe, because that’s how you end up sidelined for weeks. Spend the money here. And whatever you buy, wear them in before your first real run or you’ll be dealing with blisters.

One thing most runners overlook: what’s inside the shoe matters as much as the shoe itself. I recently wrote about insoles built for long days on your feet and how the right support changes everything on long walking and running days. Worth a read if your feet are taking a beating.

3. Wireless Earbuds

Music is fuel on a run. But a cable bouncing against your neck and catching on your shirt will ruin your rhythm fast. A good pair of wireless earbuds stays put, sounds great, and lets you forget about them once you start moving. If you’re serious about running, this is one of the best upgrades you can make.

4. A Smartwatch

Everyone’s wearing one for a reason. A smartwatch tracks your pace, distance, heart rate, and maps your runs, which is how you actually measure progress. You can’t improve what you don’t track. It’s the easiest way to see yourself getting faster over time.

5. Clothing for Different Weather

If you’re serious about running, you’re running year-round, including those brutal winter months. And honestly, there’s something rewarding about a cold-weather run when you’re dressed right. Stock up on long-sleeve tops, breathable t-shirts, lightweight running shorts, and a waterproof top and bottoms. Layering is everything.

Running Gear: FAQ

Do I really need compression socks for running?

They’re not mandatory, but they help with support and recovery, especially on longer runs. I wear them for anything over 45 minutes.

How do I break in new running shoes?

Wear them around the house and on short walks for a few days before your first real run. Your feet will thank you.

Can I run in regular sneakers?

You can, but you shouldn’t make a habit of it. Running shoes are built for forward impact. Basketball shoes, fashion sneakers, and flat soles don’t absorb shock the same way and can lead to injury.

The right gear won’t make you faster overnight, but it will keep you running longer, more comfortably, and injury-free. And that’s what actually makes you faster over time. Start with the shoes, add the rest as you go.

What’s the one piece of running gear you can’t live without?
