It’s a problem many of us have.

There’s a car in the garage or driveway that hasn’t been going, and won’t be going anywhere, for quite some time. Maybe you’ve already got a new car lined up so you have zero desire to keep hold of what you don’t need. So, how do you get rid of it?

FIND A BUYER

Naturally, the first course of action for many will be to sell it. If you do sell it, then it’s worth knowing who best to sell it to and how to get the best deal on it, which might mean investing a little in repairs or refurbishment. It’s important to get an idea of how much it might cost to fix it up and whether it’s going to be worth it for the price you sell it for.

SELL IT FOR PARTS

Sometimes, the car in and of itself might not be worth all that much. However, there may be parts that could still be lucrative to sell. If that’s the case, you’re less likely to find success in the private market, but selling it to dismantlers might be a much better strategy. You might be able to find some people who can make use of the parts in hobbyist communities, but this usually only applies to cars that are popular as “classics.”

GO GEREEN

If your car isn’t going to be doing well at any auctions and might not even be worth enough to sell it for parts, then you can still use it. Recycling cars is becoming increasingly popular as people become more and more conscious of their impact on the environment. Car recycling companies will reuse whatever materials can be used while getting rid of the stuff that can’t for you.

GIVE IT AWAY

Even if a car could be sold, you might have the inclination to be charitable. There are plenty of places that take a car donation. The car might be sold to raise funds for a cause or the parts might be sold off for it. There may even be a tax incentive for donating your car, getting you a nice deduction when tax return season comes in.

TRADE IT IN

If you haven’t yet bought the car that you plan to replace your old junker with, then your older car could be used to leverage a better deal from the seller. Naturally, this usually only works with dealers who sell sold cars. If you can trade it in, then it could knock a nice sum off the asking price, while also giving you somewhere to get rid of the car. 

There’s no point letting a car go to waste while someone could still make use of it. You might still be able to get a pretty penny for it and, even if not, it could still do a lot of good for other people. At the very least, you’re going to want to get it out of your space.
