WEEKEND AT WILDERNESS FIELD NOTES

we are the billycan - wilderness fieldnotes - camping - dandy in the bronx

This past weekend, I had to chance to check out Wilderness Field Notes. An event put on by The Billycan at Morningside Camps and Cabins in the Adirondacks. This event is meant for city folk who want a taste of the camping life. I’ve never been camping or really “roughed it,” so this event was perfect for me! Thanks to Bulleit for sponsoring this weekend at Wilderness Field Notes and giving me my first experience in the Adirondacks!

DAY 1

Some bloggers and myself were picked up near the Javits Center for a 4 hour drive to Morningside Camps and Cabins. After several naps we finally got to the mountains of central New York. We got to our cabins and unpacked for the weekend. Minerva Lake was my backyard for the next few days. This time of year, the Adirondacks is somewhat warm during the daytime but really cold at night. So I prepared for my trip with layers so I can take stuff on and off depending on where I was. I also needed heavy duty footwear since everything was either dirt or mud. No suits, but I kept it dapper in the woods.

For dinner, we were treated with various kinds of hamburgers and hotdogs. Salads were provided by Sweetgreen, one of the sponsors.  I spent the night chatting with our camp neighbors while having unlimited Adirondacks IPA, responsibly of course.

DAY 2

Today was spent trying new things. In the morning, we started with fishing lessons. I figured out how to use a rod and cast it. Didn’t catch anything other than seaweed, but it was fun! I went rowing for the first time and I dyed fabrics using only natural dyes (one of the dyes was made of bugs!). There was a class on archery, a sawing competition, and a class on water coloring! There was definitely something for everyone. The best part was simply just going on your own and just absorbing the surroundings. I don’t get to see any kind of nature like this every often. The air is truly different out here. At end of the day, we were treated by a happy hour thanks to Bulleit

Day 3 consisted of packing, napping, and a short walk before we had to leave. Thank you Bulliet for the amazing experience and The Billycan at Morningside Camps and Cabins for the space. Definitely want to do this again! What are good places to go camping or “glamping?”
