What is a cufflink? Cufflinks are basically tools for fastening your shirt cuffs. Wearing cufflinks are an alternative to buttons that are usually sewn onto shirt cuffs.

WEARING CUFFLINKS

The defining feature is that cufflinks are separate objects: sew it onto the shirt and it’s a button, but if it’s fully removable it’s a cufflink! Just like buttons, cufflinks come in many shapes, sizes, styles, and materials. Usually considered a more ornamental option, but not inherently more or less formal. Today, we look at cufflinks based around New York City.

Manhattan skyline

These cufflinks are modeled around the Manhattan skyline and designed by Seroj de Graaf. I love the detail that went behind these cufflinks. The packaging also includes the name of each building detailed on the cufflink. Use it as a map if you get lost, haha.

So how do you wear cufflinks? In this look, I threw on one of my shirt with French cuffs, but tried to make the look as casual as I can. I didn’t wear a tie for this and kept two buttons open on my shirt. Here is a little tip: put on the cufflinks BEFORE you put on the shirt. I didn’t realize I could still still slide my hand though. Time saver!

Right now, you can find these cufflinks at NYC stores of PROJECT No. 8. They are a very unique style and I hope they make something similar for all the boroughs of New York City.

Wearing cufflinks a great way to turn heads because they are usually associated with very formal moments. Throw on your favorite shirt with French cuffs and go have brunch with friends. I would recommend throwing on a blazer or a jacket to balance out the look. A shirt with only cuffs might be a bit aggressive. You don’t want your #cufflinkmoment to be a weird one!
