TRAVEL ACCESSORIES & GEAR

When you travel a lot, you need great accessories to carry them. Today, I’m checking Kendal & Hyde’s leather goods to see how they fit with my style.

UPDATE July, 31st, 2017 – As I was cleaning up my old pages, I learned that Kendal & Hyde is RIP. All links have been removed to their site.

*Full Disclosure – I received this product for free in exchange for writing a review on the blog. If I didn’t like, I wouldn’t have posted about it.

meant to protect

At the most basic level, laptop sleeves, passport covers, bags, etc, are meant to protect and help us carry the things we carry everyday. A good passport cover will keep our passport nice and crisp as we get it stamped around the world. A great passport cover with also help us carry our IDs or credit cards. The best passport cover will look good doing it.

full grain vegetable-tanned leather

Kendal & Hyde’s passport holder has the added bonus of two card slots while also being made of full grain vegetable-tanned leather made from old American cows and bulls.

HOW about The LEATHER?

The grain is made from the outermost part of the hide, that happens to also be the strongest, and therefore, most valuable part of the hide. Kendal & Hyde also uses old cows from the USA. It turns out, the older the animal is, the thicker and denser the leather. Some say American and Canadian cows have the thickest and cleanest hides on Earth. They cost more, but they are worth it. Any vegetable tanning?

What does Kendal & Hyde’s say about Vegetable tanning?

The two most common ways leather is tanned are: vegetable-tanned, which uses vegetable-derived tannins from sources such as oak and mimosa bark and takes at least 40 days to as much as a year to process; and chrome-tanned, which uses really nasty carcinogenic and earth-killing chemicals, but only takes one to two days to make. Over 90% of the leather produced in the world is chrome-tanned. Chrome-tanned leather is spongier, stretchier, weaker and a whole lot cheaper.

Take everything nice about the passport holder

Take everything nice about the passport holder and make it bigger. That’s the laptop sleeve. Here, I’m using it to carry my HP Spectre. As I’m writing this, I’m using the sleeve to prop up my laptop slightly and protect my lap from the heat from the laptop.

I love it when a brand takes the time and energy to deliver a great product. You can really feel it when you are holding it in your hands. Check them out at Kendal & Hyde.
