I had the chance to check out City Tamale this past week and taste the faire at this Hunts Point eatery. Here is what to eat in Hunts Point!

I not only got to try out tamales at City Tamale in Hunts Point, I got to speak with the founder and head chef!

Diego: Introduce yourself!

Israel: My name is Israel Veliz, I grew up between Mexico and the United States.

So why tamales?

The idea of ​​tamales arose when I was in college, studying business at Baruch College. I decided to leave school and go to work on building up City Tamale. City Tamale was incorporated in 2014 and the next 2 years I dedicated myself to work on the product. I learned to make tamales on Youtube! In 2016 we opened the Hunts Point store front.

Why Hunts Point?

I have lived in the Bronx for the last 10 years and that’s why I chose Hunts Point to open my business.

What do you do at City Tamale and what tamale do you recommend?

City Tamale is still a very young company, at this moment I am the CEO and the operations manager. Our most popular tamale and my favorites, are the jalapeno cheesy and the green tamale with chicken, they are my favorites!

Where can we find City Tamale?

City Tamale is located at 1316 Oak Point Ave, Bronx, NY 10474. We are open Monday-Friday from 5:30 am to 5pm and on Saturday from 7:00 am to 4pm. We are closed on Sundays.

Who runs the kitchen?

Meet Chef Omar Barreto! He emigrated to the United States when he was 15 years old and since then, has worked in kitchens. Starting from dishwasher to executive chef in just 10 years. Originally from the state of Morelos, Mexico. Chef Barreto is 26 years old and has tons of experience in the hospitality industry.
