The Edgar Allen Poe Cottage is located at 2640 Grand Concourse right here in my hometown. I love being able to share all the history the Bronx has to offer. So watch me rep the BX through space and time. So let’s start with 5 things you might have not known about Edgar Allen Poe.

FIVE THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT EDGAR ALLEN POE

1. Did you know that Edgar Allan Poe lived the last 3 years of his life in The Bronx, which was then know as Westchester County, from 1846-1849?

2. Did you know that 2 of Poe’s most famous works was written in the Cottage, ‘The Bells’ and ‘The Cask of Amontillado’?

3. Did you know that from the original spot where the Cottage was (about a block from the current site), Poe could see the Long Island Sound on a clear day?

4. Did you know that Poe’s death remains a mystery to this day? While still living at the Cottage, Poe was on a literary tour for his new magazine and was found dazed and confused on a street corner in Baltimore dying only days later.

5. Did you know that Batman was created in The Bronx? Two men, Bill Finger and Bob Kane, were sitting on a bench in Poe Park, and using Poe as a muse created the Caped Crusader in 1939.

There’s also a special upcoming tour of the cottage to learn more about Poe’s most fervent love, his wife Virginia. Visitors will receive a candlelight tour by costumed interpreters who will read letters and poems written by Poe. This event is on Saturday, February 9th starting at 5pm, more info here!

Thanks to The Bronx Historical Society and the Historic House Trust for contributing for this post. If you’d like to find out more about The Edgar Allen Poe Cottage and 22 amazing sites, check out Historic House Trust for more info or buy a book with all of Edgar Allen Poe’s poems.
